Building a More Inclusive Workplace

June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, recognise progress made toward equality, and reflect on how we can create workplaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to be themselves.

An inclusive workplace benefits everyone. When employees feel safe bringing their authentic selves to work, engagement, collaboration, and wellbeing improve. While organisations play an important role in promoting inclusion, colleagues also have a powerful impact through everyday actions.

Here are five of the best ways to be an ally to LGBTQ+ colleagues:

1. Educate yourself
Take the initiative to learn about LGBTQ+ identities, terminology, and experiences. Understanding different perspectives helps create a more respectful and informed workplace.

2. Respect names and pronouns
Using a person's chosen name and pronouns is a simple but meaningful way to show respect and support. If you make a mistake, correct yourself and move on.

3. Speak up against discrimination
Challenge inappropriate comments, jokes, or behaviour when you encounter them. Allyship means helping to create a workplace culture where everyone feels safe and included.

4. Support inclusive policies and events
Participate in Pride Month activities, employee resource groups, and diversity initiatives. Visible support helps create a sense of belonging and demonstrates commitment to inclusion.

5. Listen and amplify voices
Create space for LGBTQ+ colleagues to share their perspectives and experiences. Listen with empathy and help ensure their voices are heard and valued.

Pride Month is more than a celebration - it's an opportunity to strengthen workplace inclusion and build a culture of respect year-round. By learning, listening, and taking positive action, we can all contribute to creating workplaces where every individual feels welcome and empowered to thrive.
