HELPING COLLEAGUES UNDERSTAND THEIR PENSIONS

For many (including me!), a pension can feel like something that sits quietly in the background of our payslip. We know we’re paying into it, but how often do we actually stop and think about what it could mean for our life after work?

Recent planned changes to the UK State Pension make this an increasingly important conversation for employers to have with colleagues.

The Government has announced that the current State Pension Triple Lock will be adjusted from April 2030. Whatever colleagues think about the change, it is a useful reminder that retirement income shouldn't be something we simply assume will take care of itself.

Employers can help by making pensions easier to understand. That could mean regular pension awareness sessions, simple explanations of workplace contributions, reminders about where colleagues can find their pension information, or signposting independent guidance.

It is also worth encouraging colleagues to look beyond their State Pension. Their workplace pension, personal savings and other investments may all form part of their eventual retirement income. Understanding how much is being contributed today – and what that might mean in the future – can help people make more informed decisions.

Managers have a role too. Creating an environment where colleagues feel comfortable asking questions about pensions can make a surprisingly big difference. Retirement planning isn't just relevant to those approaching retirement; the earlier people understand their options, the more opportunity they have to plan.

Ultimately, businesses don't need to be pension experts or give financial advice. They simply need to help colleagues access the right information, understand the basics and recognise that planning for life after work is something worth starting sooner rather than later.
