MAKING YOUR HOME MORE MINDFUL
Having a quiet and calming space for you to relax and re-centre yourself is incredibly important. Whether the kids are driving you bananas today, there was one too many passive-aggressive emails at work and you can feel yourself ready to explode, you feel like the world is on top of you or you just want to remind yourself of the comfort of your own company it’s important to have your own space to go to.
So, here are some tips on creating your space and making your home more mindful.
Colours play a huge part in our emotions, here is a rough guide to help you choose;
RED – Passionate, aggressive, important (a dominant colour)
ORANGE – Playful, energetic, cheap (adds excitement without severity)
YELLOW – Happy, friendly, warning (yellow is often linked with happiness however this colour activates the anxiety centre of the brain, so steer clear or only have small touches in this colour for your space)
GREEN – Natural, stable, prosperous. (this is colour has an air of stability and is also the most restful colour for the eye)
BLUE – Serene, trustworthy, inviting (light blue gives a refreshing and free feeling, dark blues tend to be more somber, heightening your security senses and generally goes more for professionalism)
PURPLE – Luxurious, mysterious, romantic (lighter shades bring to mind spring and romance, especially lavender. Darker shades add mystery and symbolizes creativity, go even darker for a more sensual feel)
PINK – Feminine, youth, innocence.
BROWN – Earthy, sturdy, rustic.
BLACK – Powerful, sophisticated, edgy. (Too much black can create an intense almost scary feel to it)
WHITE – Clean, virtuous, healthy. (This colour is associated with good and clean, while it’s association with hospital staff gives it a healthy feeling too)
GREY – Neutral, formal, gloomy. (Grey is one of my favourite colours however if not paired with the right colour it can bring down the tone of the room.
Decoration is so important in your home because although after a long period of time you might stop noticing the things around you, the colours of the walls, the furniture, curtains, etc. your brain still takes in all that information on a daily basis and it has been proven that colours can have an effect on your mood. Not only which colours you pick but also which shade of said colour you pick, for example, if you think about a lilac colour it will usually make you think of spring and lavender which are both calming influences, however if you think of a bright, rich purple, you’ll be thinking more of royalty and elegance which give the room two very different feels to them. Pastels and soft, light colours are great to go for, for a calming influence.
Mirrors are a great way to let more light bounce around a room and to make your space seem bigger.
Lastly, plants help to clean the air in our home, they look beautiful and it’s often relaxing to be surrounded by nature. Below is a list of indoor plants for cleaning the air inside your home;
- Lavender
- Areca Palm
- Aloe Vera
- Snake plant
- English Ivy
- Chrysanthemum
The most important rule with your space, is to make it your own but to do so in a way that doesn’t evoke big emotions but instead evokes calming, peaceful emotions. There’s a very fine line between love and hate but there is also a fine line between happy and sad, a memory could make you smile one day and cry another. Keep all of these things in mind when creating your space.
- Choose your colours to reflect how you want to feel
- Allow as much natural light in as possible.
- Mirrors, fairy lights and candles give a softening feel to the room (even if you never light the candles)
- If you feel that your space is harbouring too much bad energy then it may be time to have a reshuffle, Feng Shui can help remove the bad energy and replace it with new, more positive energy.
We spend so much time in our homes that we often forget that this home harbours all of our day-to-day energy within it. It’s vital to take time to feel the energy in your rooms and adjust this if needs be. Make your home your sacred space and allow being at home to be nothing but a calming influence on yourself.
