ON BROWSING

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
30.03.2023.

Regular readers of this Philosopher-in-Residence and fans of plans will know that Make Me A Plan proudly professes the benefits of enjoying some of the slower things in life and taking time away from screens.

If that sounds like something you need regular help with, check out @makemeaplan on social media. Every Saturday, our team of ScreenFree SuperPlanners pop up with top tips for ditching screens and having fulfilling hobby time. Until then, you’ll have to make do with my meanwhile musings On Browsing.

Do you ever find yourself rushing from one thing to the next or trying to fit ever more into the same amount of time? If so, your relationship with browsing could be on the rocks. Here is a MMAP prescription to repair that relationship:

  1. Treat browsing as the fun it is. Imagine someone dared you, or bet you £50 that you couldn’t take 5 minutes longer in the shops and enjoy a smile or conversation with the cashier. You’d probably take up the challenge as a ridiculously easy option. Even without the monetary incentive, I promise you will enjoy this. I tried this one out recently and had a lovely conversation about yummy stews with the checkout lady.
  2. Reacquaint yourself with your browsing life. Dig out old favourite photos, magazines, collections, whatever it may be and enjoy the feeling of browsing through memories rather than dashing to doomscrolling or what might be in the future.
  3. Search out new browsing experiences. This could be looking for a local venue for an afternoon/weekend out, a class or hobby you haven’t tried, a new podcast or publication.

Next fortnight, I’ll be musing On Urgent and Important. I’ll assume you’ll diarise logging on to read this as such.

Please get in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
