WELCOMING A NEW WAVE INTO THE WORKPLACE
As we head towards August, thousands of young people will be opening their GCSE and A-Level results, with many taking their first steps towards the world of work. It’s an exciting time, but it can also feel incredibly daunting.
For many, the biggest questions aren't just "What job do I want?" but "Will anyone give me a chance?" and "What if I don't know what I'm doing?" Starting a career is a huge milestone, and it's natural to feel nervous about interviews, meeting new people, and adapting to a completely different environment.
That's why employers have such an important role to play. Supporting the next generation starts long before day one. A welcoming interview process can help build confidence, while clear communication and constructive feedback show candidates that they're valued, whatever the outcome.
Once someone joins the team, a thoughtful onboarding experience can make all the difference. Taking the time to explain processes, introduce colleagues, and answer questions helps new starters settle in and feel part of the business from the very beginning.
But support shouldn't stop after the first week. Every young person benefits from encouragement as they find their feet in the workplace. Regular check-ins, patient mentoring, and creating an environment where it's okay to ask questions can help turn uncertainty into confidence. Setting up a buddy system can be an effective way to help a new starter.
After all, every experienced professional was once the new starter wondering if they were doing things right.
Investing in young talent isn't just about filling vacancies – it's about shaping the workforce of the future. By offering guidance, understanding and opportunities to learn, we can help the next generation develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
There will be things the business can learn from them too – so giving their fresh ideas and perspectives airtime can be of great value to the business and let them know their contributions are important.
A little support at the beginning of someone's career can have a lasting impact, and it's something they'll remember for years to come.
