WORKING RELATIONSHIP BUILDING - PART TWO
You always remember great service, in fact with the correct level of attentiveness and rapport you are even willing to overlook short-fallings in other areas. Conversely you are likely to remember particularly poor service even longer.
A strong professional relationship with your existing clients may well lead to repeat business, but equally important is their recommendation of you to others. These guidelines should help with the building of lasting relationships with your clients or customers.
Good communication is always key. Try to make yourself available to listen to clients' ideas, questions or concerns. This demonstrates that their project is important to you. It will also let them feel comfortable that they can be open with you and that their ideas and concerns will be taken seriously.
Acknowledging your client as an individual rather than a financial asset can go a long way. The extent of the personal connection will vary depending on your industry, client type, and the client’s personality. Simply showing an interest in their wellbeing (and that of their family, if you know your client is a parent for example) or talking about hobbies or interests goes a long way to developing a relationship which surpasses simple faceless business connections.
Try to keep your discussions about projects less technical where possible. It may be your area of expertise but it isn’t theirs; if it were, they wouldn’t require your involvement! If they become lost in the intricacies of the processes involved they can become disconnected from the development. Try to ensure
that they remain engaged. Explain your processes clearly and simply to help them feel knowledgeable and involved.
Always stay positive, however overwhelmed you may feel, as an independent professional it is a must to show a positive face to clients. Confidence and enthusiasm is what people want to see from somebody who they have chosen to work with.
In order to build a strong and lasting relationship with clients, they must be able to trust and rely on you as an expert. This means it is crucial to maintain openness when it comes to your professional opinions and point of view regarding the project.
Although tempting to appear agreeable and avoid uncomfortable confrontation by telling a client what you think they want to hear, in the long run it is always best to highlight concerns as and when they appear. By confidently expressing your honest opinions, clients will respect your initiative and drive to achieve the best outcome.
Lastly, never promise unrealistic results, set reasonable and achievable expectations and ensure that you always achieve them.
