ON MEASURE

The Philosopher-in-Residence Blog Series from Make Me A Plan's Principal Planner, Anna Pascoe
18.07.2024.

It’s a busy old post-pandemic world eh? This good ship Plankind and this Philosopher-in-Residence have been reflecting on simpler times recently.

Measure is a term that pretty much always has positive connotations: unless you’re a 24/7 hedonist/anarchist, you’re probably going to consider a measured approach a decent way of tackling things. You most likely approve of your clothes and possessions fitting where they’re supposed to fit, ie being measured accurately.

So why is it, when it comes to time, something we’re inherently not in control of, is the modern human so obsessed with doing dozens of things at once?

The answer is – we are so conditioned by our sub-conscious drive to defer to our devices, many of us are actually oblivious to the fact that we are not taking a measured approach to the use of our own time.

Do you find yourself looking at your phone whilst watching TV or spending time with family or friends?

Do you find yourself looking at your phone whilst working?

Do you find yourself flicking between emails and work?

Do you find yourself looking at your phone or emails whilst eating?

The list can and does definitely go on, but you get the picture. Try and get the message too! Set yourself a goal this summer to stop stressing yourself and start doing one thing at a time. And let us know how you get on!

Next fortnight, I’ll be writing On Holiday – except as this Philosopher-in-Residence is taking a little summer break, it’ll be the 15th August, rather than a fortnight. Plenty of time to hotly anticipate and take a leisurely approach yourself to getting in touch with any particular aspects of this subject you’d like me to write about.

In the meantime,

Happy Planning
